Super A carb rebuild questions (Carter)

Hi,

I have a kit to rebuild my Carter carb. It has no instructions and I never have much luck adjusting the float. Is there an easy way to do it and if so, how? Any input on the idle screw initial setting would be helpful too. I thank you for your input in advance!

Fred: Personally I've given up on Carter carbs for Super A tractors. IH used about 5 different Carter carbs during Super A production and now the industry are trying to service them with two different kits. I've had both kits home and neither one uses the same gasket between the two halves as in my carb. It's been 20 years since my Super A didn't leak when shut off. Now, I blame that leak on the damn plastic tip on needle valve.

Zenith on the other hand do have kits for all their carbs. What's more I bought the kit for my 130 at CaseIH, and lo and behold a steel tipped needle valve. What a pleasure not having to shut gas off when I stop the tractor.

I think there is another problem with carb kits, in the past partsmen with a cavalier attitude have sold kits that were close, now folks are trying to match up based on wrong kit. I'm sure that is what's wrong in my own case, and it was me they sold the wrong kit to 20 years ago.

I have had decent luck rebuilding them but its time consuming. The big thing I ran into was the pot metal bowls were warped and it was a bugger getting the air bleed jet out of the top of the bowl so I could flatten it out. As far as gaskets go I made my own out of thicker gasket paper and they have worked so far. I have 6 yrs on one for my Super A. I alway shut the gas off because Dad got me in the habbit of it when I was a kid.

Hi,

I always shut it off too because my father-in-law did. Those guys really knew their stuff! I will continue their wise habits!

The quality of carb kits are getting worse. Even with a new needle & seat its tough to get them to stop from dripping. It seems to me the hole in the seat used to be tapered a little. Now there is just a hole drilled in. We used Tisco kits for years, but I'm about fed up with them. Poor instructions and very few parts in kit. The gaskets are usually shrunk. Those die cast bowls are a pain. Usually warped some and tough to get screws and jets out. Allis used the same kind of setup for awhile. I suppose the companies just bought from whover was cheaper that year.

Fred: I've been running gas Farmalls for 60 years, never turned the gas off in my life until the late 80s and those damn plastic tipped needle valves. Through the 60s and 70s I was running 5-6 gas Farmalls, they never leaked. Since Carter made 5 different Super A carbs, it should still require 5 different kits. I never turn the gas off on my 130 or 140.

Something to try with regards to the new style rubber (or whatever it is) tipped needles. I've found that if you install the needle in the seat and tap it a few times (it seems you need to be fairly vigorous about this, at least in comparison to its size) it will seal properly. Before doing this the carbs I rebuilt always leaked, since I started doing this I have yet to have one leak. Hope this helps, Sam
