On my SM my dad years ago cut a couple plates to put between the housing and the bearing/gear carrier, so the actuator wouldn't expand so far and lock up. There is probably a 1/4 inch space between the plate and the carrier, away from the housing/carrier mating surface, that the plates are making up for. Should I pull the carriers and have them machined down some? They work but it's a pain when I have to service them.

I also see that my housing should be milled so that the actuator and discs are the same thickness as the housing is deep, I think that was done also.

No. Do not machine anything off of the carrier.
Machining the housing can (usually take up as much space as housing wear uses). If the disks are thick, and the housing is machined so it is correct, the spacers should not be needed. JimN

I'll have to take a couple pictures so you can see what I'm talking about. Without the plates dad put in, the discs would have to travel another 1/4 inch or better to contact the carrier. Maybe I am missing a couple pieces or something.
