When to polarize

I am actually working on an International truck. I am changing the Voltage regulator because I think it went bad. For a while with the cover off of the VR I could close the contacts manually and the generator would stay on until the RPM’s dropped. After disconnection the wires to check connections and then putting them back I can not get the generator to charge. Do I need to polarize?

It (the Generator) shouldnt need polarized but if it makes you feel better it wont hurt. Sure you got the new VR well grounded?? It needs a good ground to work.

I actually printed out your guide and took it home last Friday but my wife had other ideas for my time. Thanks for writing it up. I was afraid I did something to screw up the generator.

Shouldn't need to polararize if you simply remove/reconnect wiring. However as John T suggests it only takes a moment to do and costs nothing.

Only time a generator MUST be polarized is after a generator has been rebuild or when a generator of unknown polarity is swapped into another engine. And I was involved in one odd instance where generator polarity was lost (along with a lot of the wiring and some paint...) due to a lightning strike.

Your truck problem sounds like bad cutout relay contacts in the VR. Working through John T's procedure should figure it out for you.

One way to screw up a regulator is to start the tractor which has a generator that happens to be of the opposite polarity from how the battery is connected..... Thats why in doubt polarize the generator BEFORE start up.
