Replacing bearings and seals in Super A

Don't know much about the red tractors since I have only worked on the green two cylinders. My '52 or '53 Super A that I garden with will have to have bearings and seals in transmission replaced before next spring. How big a chore is that and where do I start--with a service manual?

That'd be a good place. The parts manual is also good for better detail. If that's all you're going to be working on, you can also print the appropriate blow-ups and parts listings from the caseih site.

Are you talking about the seals and bearings on the shafts within the transmission, or those going out the sides with the diff shafts and those on the final drives?

Don't really know which seals and bearings need replacing. All I know it makes a popping noise in reverse, whining noise in all gears and the 140 wt. leaks out where the axle housing bolts to tranny.

The gears will whine some, nature of the beast. The popping is very likely one of the big ball bearings on the diff shafts, the ones that pass out through the side of the tranny to the final drives. And it is the seal around that shaft that is leaking. If you're lucky, the popping will be on the same side as the leak. There are also large bearings and seals at the tops of the final drives around the diff shafts and another pair at the bottom around the actual axles. Removal of the diff shaft on the left of an A is much simpler than on the right, but either makes a good project. The mauals give the order of work and you can find some good threads on it here in the archives.

Also, on the popping, don't rule out a loose wheel bolt. That can get pretty noisy, too, but is usually but not always in both directions.

Billy: I don't like the sound of that popping idea. I had a friend decide to wait until spring. The bearing broke up, jambed in such a way that it broke the final drive casting.

His was an axle bearing an it allowed the bull gear reduction to ride up on teeth of each other, breaking the casting.

You might try jacking each rear wheel, watch as jack takes the weight for movement of axle in relation the final drive housing. If it moves, I wouldn't wait too do repairs.
