656 shifter

I have a Farmall 656 (1965) with the 5-speed manual transmission. It's always been iffy shifting, and now it's gotten to the point where all I have is 1st and reverse. I can no longer move the lever sideways. I have an I&T manual and a parts book. I'm going to try to tackle this myself. What's in store for me, and is this common in these tractors? There must be some way to lube the lever mechanism, but I don't see it, yet. Thanks for any input you might have.

the kit was over $500 when i got one several years ago.
there is a square pin that wears and slides out of place on the horizontal round shaft. i have a couple in the drawer in the shop that i kept around in case i needed them, which i don't any more. email if one would be of use.

Bill: you must have had $100. bills hanging out of your pocket when you went to IH dealer. I bought mine before the kit was established, thus had to buy it by the piece. It might have been $100. Now I realize that was a long time ago, but inflation hasn't been that bad.

Ya, the pin works out then you can't cross shift. Earlier models had a round pin, kit had square. They also changed the gates from one piece to seperate pieces. If you can see end of pin and drive it back to a centered position you may get by for a while. They are not much fun to work on but if you do it all correctly they shift much better.

hugh, i just went through the cih web parts lookup. the service kit for the cross shaft on the shifter is part# 534131R91. price listed is $865 on hoober's website.

Bill: When I think about it probably 72-73 I bought those parts, that's 36-37 years ago. Time does seem to fly by, and along with it inflation.

I find it much the same at CaseIH, on those parts that are worn bad on all tractors, that used tractor parts guys don't have them. They like to stick it to one on those.

i know what you mean about time. i bought the gear drive 656 at dad's auction in '89 and fought with it for a few years, so it had to be in the early-mid 90s when i got the kit for the shifter.
you gotta love that parts pricing philosophy that knows when they have you by the short hairs.

Bill: Makes me glad I only play around with my 3 little offsets, and not some of the iron I farmed with in the past.
