Value of 6788 I.H.

Talked to a man this week who may have an interest in selling his 6788 as he does not use it much anymore. I have always wanted an ant eater as we called them back in the day. What were the production numbers and any sold lately for a value range. Tractor is currently running at 178 HP and has no duals but is very clean with 5600 hours. Any ideas and help would be appreciated here. Thanks Migraine

Migraine: Why not buy a locomotive, wouldn't be much longer. a friend of mine claimed he used radar to drive his 6588 in the fog.

I see 2+2s in the $7500 - $15000 range in WI, depending on condition. We run a 3588 at 240Hp and haven"t had any issues. We do not abuse the power, though, especially on tillage. We pull the same equipment with it as we do with our 170 Hp 1066 Dualed up. Run it on the chopper once and a while, and boy will it eat feed. I always liked 2+2s. Some people do not, but that is their right. But I know of 6 of them being used all the time within 2-3 miles of our farm, and atleast 5-10 more withing 10 miles. Still popular around here. Yeah, they are long. Big deal. If taken care of they are still a good machine. Good luck, Doug

If you need that kind of HP just get it. You won't ever regret it. I bought a 3388 several years ago and now my son-in-law has a 3788. Between the 2 of them, I can't decide which I like better. I have done everything with my 3388 and it does a good job. Even mowed hay and baled with it last year and had no problems. It never gets stuck! I have a big square baler and I always pull it with the 3388. Only problem I have ever had with it is the hydraulic pump.

I liked our 3788 in the hot weather- with the forward airflow and fuel tank between you and the motor it is a lot cooler than a straight-framed tractor. I don't know what kind of horse ours put out but we believe we blew apart the pressure plate while chopping. Our would get stuck, empty 23 degree firestone bias tires. I have pictures somewhere of the 37 and the chopper sliding sideways between the dump wagon and 7580.

Even turned up so much, the 7580 would still run circles around it moldboard or chisel plowing. But it was twice the tractor at the PTO. It always spun out the LF and RR tires, I think the driveshaft torque lifted the LF and it at the RR got light at that point and it spun.

Thanks for the replies. I think I will pursue it a little farther and then look into adding a lean to on the stable to house it in. That ought to be a big hit with mama don't you think? Migraine

Migraine: I guess I can't seem to appreciate those 2+2 tractors, by the time they came along I'd already had enough of IH. 16 new or close to new Farmalls came to our farm between 1942 and 1975. IH 66 series tractors were the best thing Deere ever experienced.
