Farmall A Loop Rim Bolts

What is the correct size, length, and type of bolt for the loop rims on a Farmall A? The wheel centers side to side are different, one thick cast, and one pressed steel so it looks like the two sides would require different length bolts. When I called my dealer today, there was only one P/N, and I wanted to be sure before ordering.

Any and all help is appreciated.

5/8" NC, 2-1/4" long for the steel wheel, 2-3/4" for the cast. The bolts were square-heads with a lock washer and hex nut.

The parts listing is a little confusing, the way they laid it all out. The part #s will be irrelevant any more, you'll be shopping for hardware items, but for what it's worth the shorter ones were 350523R1 and the longer PO16481 with an oh not a zero in the latter.

Haggis, thank you for the quick response, that is really helpful and much appreciated. I was expecting there was a carriage type bolt (similar to Ford) to 'set' in the loop, but with what you've indicated, it sounds like there must be some sort of "clip" that fits over the end of the loop that the bolt goes through. Is this accurate, and are these clips available?

(It's still Haggis. I posted under Haggis a while back on another board and the cookie keeps defaulting -- all my tractor buddies are almost as confused as I am at this point!)

That last bit of information is important. It sounds like you might have after-market replacement rims, which will make a difference in the bolt length.

The original lugs on the rims were rectangular, riveted to the rim, and had a square recess in each side so that a square-head bolt dropped in just about flush from either side. That kept the head from turning.

The common replacement rims have a loop welded to the rim, just the right size to pass the 5/8" bolt through, but NO recess, so that the underside of the bolt head presses against the end of the lug, rahter than the center as the originals did. These are about 1-5/8" or 1-3/4" deep. Because they aren't recessed, you'll need longer bolts. 3-1/2" will work for the steel wheel and 4" on the cast. If that is the case, there's no advantage to square heads and you can use the easier to find hex heads. I don't know of any clips that fit on to hold them, just a wrench on each side.

That's it!!! I looked at my rims CLOSELY. The loops ARE riveted to the rims, and they have the pocket for the square headed bolts! I just had it in my mind they should have Ford-type bolts, I didn't look closely enough!

I can't thank you enough for the help. I now know EXACTLY what bolts I need to find.

The adjustable rims for the A and B have loops riveted to the rim and are smooth on each side for a 1/2 inch bolt. I have 6 tractors with them. The cast center could use a square head on the inside of the cast center. You must have some different rims if they have a place for a square head. I dont know what kind of rim you have that has a steel center but it isnt original. Do you need a matching cast center for the other side?

Gene, my rims are not adjustable, (other than configuring the wheel center on different sides of the loop) and have the riveted loops just as Scotty described them. They definately take a 5/8" bolt with a 15/16" square head. (see attached pic)
