SMTA brakes

I put new balls, new springs, new pads, polished and cleaned everything up. Problem is now brakes work great but when you let the pedal up, they keep coming on. Then you have to stop and back up to release them. I tried adjusting them tight, loose, and in between but still have the same problem. Any suggestions??

Not sure if this will apply to your situation but some years, ago I bought an International road tractor. After I paid for it and went to pick it up and drive it home, everytime I would step on the brakes, they would not release. It turned out that the linkage needed a little grease at the pivot points. A few squirts of grease at each pivot point, the problem went away. LOL.

Don't think there is any difference on the actuator. Were the splines clean--not rusty? Are the pins in the actuating assembly free--not hanging up at all? You said you had the balls & grooves they work in clean. Might have the adjustment on the pedals too tight?

The actuator only goes in one way. Get some high-temp, copper-based, never-seize and coat the ramps and balls. If you use it very much you can do this once a year for a LONG time and still be money ahead. The gray graphite-based stuff doesn't take the heat well, gums up, and they start to stick again after a little while.

Did you have the outer brake covers (housings) milled flush with the top of the disc - measured with everything loaded into the covers? If not, you may be pushing down so far that the balls are riding up out of the grooves and locking them selves up on top of the actuators.

In otherwords, the balls may be traveling too far because the covers are too wide and allowing it to happen. Let us know what you figure out.

Took it all back apart. Got another actuator out of my other parts MTA cleaned everything up, used high temp never seize, and put new springs in it. Works fine now. Looked the old one over, I think it's like you say, it's worn and needs the outer case turned. So, we're good to go for now. Thanks alot for all the info.
