I have a W 6 tractor with the gear shift stuck in reverse but can be shifted into first gear. When in reverse the tractor travels backwards O.K. but when shifted to first gear the transmission locks up and kills the engine. How do I get the gear shift back to where it belongs. Thanks.

Normally I would say this is the typical stuck in two gears at once problem. However, 1st and Reverse are on the same slider gear.

You can't be in 1st AND Reverse at the same time unless something is really really wrong in the transmission.

Are you SURE that it's 1st gear you're shifting into? Could it be 3rd?

I guess it wouldn't hurt to try the stuck-in-two-gears-at-once cure. You need to remove the shift lever, and look down in the hole. There's three shift rails in there. Use a big screwdriver to pry all three back to center.

The ball on the end of the shift lever is worn after 60 years of use. You can build it back up with weld and grind it down to fit.

Thanks, but how do you remove the shift lever without removing the top of the transmission cover? It seems this is all in one piece and the only way to get at the shifting forks is to remove the complete top of the transmission. which look like a big job?

There should be two small disk like plugs on the left and right side of the shifter. Either drive one of these into the hole, or drill a small hole in it and put a screw into it to pull it out. There is a pivot pin inside that gets driven out the other side (pushing the other disk out of the far side.) The pin may be worn and also need replacement. The pin can be made from a grade 8 bolt shank cut to length. Good luck, JimN
