H- Starter will not Engage

I have a H that has already been converted to 12v, to start I bought the tractor last year and the only problem I had was I would have to disconnect the positive cable or it would discharge. I wnet to start the other day and it only clicked, I thought it might be the battery was low so I tried jumping with the same result. there did seem to be a lot of arcing when I tried this. I also tried bypassing the starter switch with nothing. I was thinking with the amount of arcing that I got that it might be a ground problem, the ground is attached to one of the starter bolts. Also any ideas on the discharge problem? thanks in advance for any help.

Simple and correct answer.
The starter is jammed in the flywheel teeth. Loosen it at its mounting bolts and it will make a snapping sound when the teeth click out of the jam.
Been there with thousands of others. The tractor will now act normal in every way and start. To repair this a new clutch type starter drive will be needed (looks different, and is the solution, don't go for the same inertia drive in it now.
The discharge situation can be fixed easily by replacing the "one wire" alternator it has with a three wire system Delco 10SI series alternator. Cheap from an auto store, or wrecking yard.
To wire it up, use these diagrams. One of them is for the 10SI system. JimN

On the arcing when you attempt to crank there’s a couple possiblies:

1 – Short circuit inside the starter. The starter will need to be removed/opened to locate the problem.

2 – The starter pinion (the “bendix”) has jammed into the flywheel ring gear. You can free it by manually rotating the crankshaft backward a bit (put the transmission in 5th and rock the tractor backward a few inches), or by loosening the starter bolts and pulling on and wiggling the starter until the bendix returns, then retightening the bolts.

If you discover it IS a jammed bendix it means the bendix and/or the ring gear are worn. And it WILL jam again!

The only permanent fix is to replace the worn part(s).

The discharge problem when the battery is left connected most likely is the cutout relay inside the voltage regulator has stuck closed.

To check, note the ammeter reading with the engine stopped and the battery connected. If the ammeter shows a slight discharge, then returns to center when you disconnect the wire from the BAT terminal at the regulator, the regulator is bad.

Not too uncommon with a weak battery the starter is probably locked. Just do as other post says loosen the starter.

It may lock next time you try to start it and it may start 100 more times without locking. Have run 12 hour/day + working tractors that would lock occasionaly just loosened starter and went on with my work at end of day never missed the couple minutes spent unlocking starter. Like Gene said they will lock more often if battery is weak.

Hey a better solution that requires no tools. Put the transmission in 5th gear unlock the brakes and rock the tractor back and forth at the wheels. You should see the fan rotate back and forth should pull the bendix spring back and unlock the starter. Worth every penny of effort!!!!

Put in 5th and rocked it a couple of times and that done the trick, push starter switch started right up. Think the battery was little week. For the discharge, the alernator has 3 wires one is jumped back to the wire on the back and the third wire returns to the positive side of the starter switch.

That will not do the trick. That wire From #1 terminal needs to go to the ignition switch ignition terminal. It also needs to have a light bulb (clearance size real bulb) or a diode (3 amp 150piv radio shack) spliced into the wire. The light needs to have one end attached to the #1 terminal, the other light lead needs to go to the ignition switch. The diode will also do well, and it is put in the line with the end that has a white band around it toward the alternator. JimN

It is wired as you have described except no diode or warning light. Could adding a diode fix the problem of the battery draining off?
