Thanks for Super A electric help!

Hi,

Got the generator working on the Super A. The commutator needed sanding and the regulator replacing. I probably ruined the regulator by disconnecting the battery every winter to save it and not polarizing it again each Spring when I connect it back up. Not sure, just a guess.

It takes a longggggggg time for the generators (the thing you polarize NOT the Voltage Regulator) soft iron field poles to loose their magnetic polarity, so not sure if that was your problem. The problem occurs when a generators field polarity is OPPOSITE that of the battery and you start it up WITHOUT RE POLARIZING THE GENERATOR which can indeed harm the Voltage Regulator..

Congratulations on the repair

As John indicates, it is not likely your fault. Original style regulators on these are really an electro mechanical device, and are delicate inside. They fail and are considered a wear point. Some out of spec regulators can have their contacts cleaned and then adjusted (with tools, experience and conditions of adjustment under control) and be put back in service. Shops won't do that anymore as it is a risk they would take and not as cost effective as putting a new regulator on it. JimN
