installing H 4 magneto on a TD-6 gas start diesel engine

What is the correct way to time an H 4 magneto to an International TD 6 gas start diesel engine. I do the following: bring the engine to top dead center with number one cylinder: Next is it correct to turn the magneto clockwise or counterclockwise to bring the rotor in line with number one terminal on the cap. The magneto on a TD 6 turns the opposite direction from the H 4 magnetos used on gasoline engine international farm tractors. One manual I have says to turn the magneto clockwise to align the rotor with the number one plug terminal on the cap and the other manual says to turn the magneto counterwise clockwise to align the rotor with number one terminal on the cap. These procedures are performed from the impulse coupling on the magneto

Make sure you're on the compression stroke. I think the rotor does turn CCW which puts No1 at about 11 0'clock. Hal

Get it so it trips at TDC & it will run. If it backfires & don't run remove it & turn it 180 degrees or switch the wires across from each other. Does the impulse catch when you turn it CCW?

Thank you for the reply. Which way to turn the mag viewed from the coupling end when number one piston is top dead center on the compression stroke is my question. I agree that the mag should just be ready to trip on impulse . When turning clockwise one is turning the mag on impulse and it is difficult to set the mag in a position of just ready to trip and align the coupling with the drive on the engine . Turning the mag counter clockwise makes it easier to put the rotor in number one firing position. I have a wico mag and it does work by turning it counterclockwise to put the rotor in number one firing position. I sent the mag to a person in Bellingham Washington who works on mags.

Yes, the mag impulse does catch when turning it counterclockwise. Seems that it would be necessary to turn the mag through impulse for number one firing when the number one piston is top dead center on the compression stroke then install the mag on the engine.

The plug wires are in the firing order: 1,3,4,2 in the distrubutor cap. number 1 is at the 11 o clock position, and the remaining plug wires in the cap are 90 degrees apart with number 3 90 degrees from number one moving in a clockwise position. I just talked with a person in Maine who repairs magnetos. He told me to turn the impulse coupling counter clockwise to align the rotor with number one terminal on the cap . Number one piston to be at top dead cenber on the compression stroke.

The engine should start when you install the mag that way. If you ever pull a mag or distributor
again for any reason note where the rotor is pointing. Make a little sketch then DON'T move the engine. When its ready to reinstall you point the rotor by your sketch and you don't need to bring No1 piston to TDC on the compression stroke. Your tractor should start. Hal
