My lift is real weak and the fluid smells burnt. I had the lift rebuilt last fall and it has been working great until lately. The fluid stinks very bad. Any ideas what might be wrong? Thanks in advance

If one of your controls is out of adjustment, or an auxiliary valve is not centering, it can put the system under continuous bypass at the pressure safety regulator. this heats the oil very rapidly and will change it chemically. Replace the oil ASAP, and use a Hytran spec. fluid. Make sure the system is not bypassing. Good luck, Jim

Bubbanm: After the touch control unit was rebuilt, were the control levers adjusted? Does the tractor noticably labor at idle? If those control levers aren't adjusted properly the system may not come off demand.

Your best way to check the lever adjustment is start tractor at low idle, place both levers at center of quadrent. Then slowly move one lever at a time fully forward, then fully back. If you notice the engine start to labor, then adjustment of that lever is off in that position. Repeat the same with the other lever. Always make sure the lever you not testing is at center position. The problem may not be the control you are having lift problems with. If for example the right lever is off adjustment, always on demand, the left lever will not lift worth a damn.

There is an adjustment proceedure for those levers in the IH Blue Ribbon Service manual, it's quite detailed, plus it uses photos or diagrams. Those photos and diagrams are worth 1,000 words, most of us on here don't type that well. Before you start all this, do as Jim said, fill it with new Hy-tran. Also clean the screen.

bubbanm: I got the book out, been a few years since I did that adjustment. It's quite simple actually.

On the bottom of the touch control unit where the linkage to the levers protrude, there are stops. Those stops should be adjusted to point of stopping the linkage at point where tractor starts to labor. Two stops one for each direction. Once you get the stops adjusted, then you can adjust the levers to suit the stops.
