Generator belt tightening

Today I flipped the bracket as suggested, which did get the pulley in line. The belt has too much slack that can't be adjusted out. It could be that it has an incorrect belt.

How do I check for correct belt?

Is there a way to pull the slack out from the crank pulley, or only on the generator end?

Thanks for the help!

The pulley you have is adjustable by turning one half toward the other. (makes it narrower, with the belt riding higher) if that does not fix it, use a 1/2" smaller belt. (length) good morning. JimN

Yeah, tried thinning it to ride higher. It tightened it, but not enough.]

How do you measure a belt?

ugh, first I'll have to pull the old one off. That looks like quite a task. :?

Gates has belts in 1/2 inch increments in this generator belt series. I know that lots of people don't like to use Gates belts, but we've always gotten along with them.
Jim---you were totally correct on that Ford tractor starter question several months ago. The starter switch does indeed go to ground to activate the solenoid. I'd never seen a schematic on a Ford prior. Thanks.

It is painful. The Big fan belt must be removed first. That requires the adjusting to loose of the water pump pulley Spray it with penetrant, and remove the setscrew entirely (allows penetrant to get to threads better) Then use a brass or very soft iron drift punch to tap (in both directions on the setscrew boss, (and the opposite side) to get it moving. Wire brushing the exposed threads is also good.
When putting it back, do not over tighten, It should have and inch or inch and a quarter slack when pushed and pulled on one side of the big belt. Too tight just ruins water pump bearings.
The Big belt does not need to be removed entirely over the fan blade tips (a struggle) just weasel the old belt under it, and new back on (again under it on the WP pulley. Good luck with the fan pulley. Be gentle, they break. Jim
