working on m farmall. will not fire with cap and rotor on distributor and if you take cap off of distributor it will fire up and run.Whats going on?

How well does it run? If there is a crack in the cap, it theoretically could run on 1 cylinder. I know it is possible on a gas 706, because the neighbor changed the spark plugs & wires on his 706 & got the coil wire in #2 hole on the dist. cap & the #2 wire in the center hole.

Are you refering to the points inside the distributor??? Impossible for it to run without the cap!! Where would the fire come from for the spark plugs??? Nice Joke, very funny!!!

Sorry, you are crazy. When you take the cap off, how far from the distributor does it hang or is it just loose? Are you removing the rotor also? Are you talking about the cap with the coil wire and spark plug wires attached to it or the dust cap that sits under the rotor and distributor cap (the dist cap has the spark plug and coil wires coming from it)?

You"ve flooded it on Spark. Probably the Timing is way advanced and you pushed too much spark in the cylinders. Now it only runs with the spark removed. Pull the plug wires off the plugs, crank it over and let the spark drain out, then try it again! Sorry, just couldnt hep meself!

I think it may be time to sell my tractors and go back to that lizzard farm I had just outside Tucson.....

If you are calling the "cap", the cover for the points that fits over the distributer shaft that the rotor fits on, yes that can happen. The old cover does not let the actual cap fit properly. Otherwise, unfortunately, you are hallucinating.

I had a similar, but very different, issue on my 300. If you pulled the center feed for the distributor, the one from the coil, and let it arc from the coil, the engine would run better. I kind of thought that the points were not separating well enough and by pulling the power and causing it to arc, then the coil would discharge better and cause better spark, but that was just me thinking and I don"t really know. I eventually switched to 12V and electronic ignition and now she fires and runs like a top.
