Carburetors

I have a 1940 Farmall and a 1947 Super A. The A has a Marvel Carburetor and the Super A has a zenith. I don't find either carburetor to be very dependable. Is there another brand carburetor that will bolt up and replace these? Preferably one I can order via. the Internet. I appreciate any suggestions

Just wondering what isn't dependable on them? What are the symptoms?

The Marvel is obviously an old-timer, how about the Zenith? Depending how badly they've been neglected, some just need a cleaning and a kit, some need major work if the passages inside were corroded from moisture over a lot of years of sitting, and some just can't be saved.

About the most common bolt-up replacement I know of is one of the new Zentihs. I have a 14007 on each, my BN and My SuperC, and I can't say I've ever had a carb problem with either.

The only other choice is a Carter, and the only Carters to be found are used. I personally have rebuilt several each of the Marvels, Zeniths, and Carters, and I would choose either a Zenith or a Marvel long before I would choose a Carter.

I've worked on a few carbs, probably most on automobiles. The magic numbers are:

keep it clean, and buy a kit with good quality gaskets

keep it clean

use clean gasoline and

keep it clean

440, I'll add just one more key ingredient. Follow the instructions in the rebuild kit, and don't try to second guess the specifications from the engineers that designed that carburetor.

I NOTICE on a picture of the Zenith 14007 carburetor I found on the internet that the carburetor does not have what I would call a "load screw" Do you compensate for this in some way? I have always thought one of the problems with the old zenith on my Super A is that it too has no load screw. The marvel does have one. Right now both engines will run OK but only if the marvel carburetor is installed. This requires a lot of swapping around. The zenith wont even try to work. I guess it needs some more soaking and cleaning. I am beginning to think I ought to be trying to buy another marvel instead of a zenith. New replacement marvels just cant be had now days right?

A load adjustment screw is available for the Zenith. I have them. I will check on the availability of a NEW Marvel-Schebler. I THINK those can still be had.
