International 3220

when I tried to start my 3220 this morning it wouldn't start, the lights on the dash turn on but the starter motor doesn't turn over, it doesn't even sound like it is engaging the starting gear. I have my foot on the clutch, but I couldn't tell if there was a problem with the clutch safety switch when I tried testing it. I think the problem is electrical, all the wires appear to be attached to the starter and the ignition switch. I put a volt meter on the battery and it shows just under 12 volts. any ideas?

Hi Alex,
Check the battery by turning on the head lights and then attempt to start the tractor. If the lights go out or very dim then I would suspect battery or battery connections or ground cable.
Next suspect would be the clutch safety switch. Put your VOM on Volts and connected it across the switch connectors, should read 12v with clutch not depressed and 0v with clutch depressed.

I checked the battery and it is fully charged, I put a battery charger on it to be sure. I also checked the clutch safety switch and it is also working. Could it be in the starter?

Hi Alex, it could be the starter or the solenoid switch on the starter. My brother has overhauled the starter on his 454 twice in the last 37 years. Same starter as 3220. Do you know how to jump a starter with a screw driver? If you do be sure the tractor is in neutral and parking brake set. Sometimes if the brushes are worn they will hang up on the edge of the starter motor commutator and a tap on the starter with a hammer will reseat the brushes.
