how many farmall M's came with a (GM) detroit diesel? just curious. there is a guy pulling here that has one and i have never seen another one or even heard of another one.

Zero from the factory, probably several from the garage of the dedicated Detroit Diesel crowd.
I once saw a John Deere A powered by a 10hp Briggs & Stratton. It did not do wheelies. JimN

I talked to a guy that had one of these tractors at a show years ago. He told me there was a kit marketed for this conversion but I can't remember who made it. I think it used the 3-53 engine.

Zero.

There have, however, been quite a few aftermarket engine conversions done over the years. I've seen Detroit and Shepard diesels in Farmall M's. Chevy and IH V8's in M's too. I even saw an F-20 with a Detroit and an F-14 with a Harley Davidson motorcycle engine.

The only limit is your imagination and pocketbook.

Why mess with a little Jimmy diesel when you can have a 3116 CAT?

Steven, is that your puller? If so what does it DYNO? It looks like it grew there, not a modified stuff-in. Nice rig.

The 2-71 came in a "kit". You did the install yourself and you had to do some of your own parts acquisition and fabrication. My father has an M with an original "kit". Has the proper engine (GM block), proper bellhousing, flywheel and variable speed governor as well as the other parts listed in the parts list. I have the original install instructions somewhere that verifies this tractor has the original "kit" per P/N match and not some back alley garage cluster... Currently in the process of cleaning up the original installation and doing a restoration on the rest. hopefully finished in time to make the trip across the Big Mac this fall...

There are a couple of 2-71 equipped M's floating around that are retrofits. A couple are very well done.

Original "Kitted" M's are about as rare as hens teeth...

There is also an MD with a 2-71 retrofit (not sure if it is an original GM kit or not) in Cheboygan. They do quite a bit of pulling with it...

Here is ours as purchased.

well i guess they call it an experimental gm. i guess it is supposed to be factory. steven that is one badass rig! looks awsome!

Is this the same GM diesel they used in the Massey Ferguson super 99 and Oliver 99? I think I have the numbers right on the MF and Oliver. I know they both came out factory with some sort of GM diesel.

The 3 71 was used in the MF 98 and Oliver Super 99.

The fellow that owns the MD with the 2-71 in Cheboygan has a son that works as a mechanic for one of the ferry lines in the Straits. My father has sold them a few DD's for the boats and trucks stuff up there to them a few times a year.

My grandpa bought a "kitted" M Farmall maybe 15 years ago. He and I both live in mid-Missouri and took it to shows locally for a long time. There was a man not far away that worked at the shop that installed the kit in the tractor that we have, he had one also. It does have the correct bell housing, flywheel etc... We do not have any paper work but I will provide pics as soon as I can, maybe Monday. Any information that anyone can provide will be appreciated greatly. I believe ours is a 1952 Farmall M. I had it on a pto dyno at a red power show and it turned 53 hp. Thanks in advance for any info.
