Looking for some words of wisdom on the best way to release the brakes to get an F-14 rolling again. About to start a major restoration and need to get it loaded up for transport. Thanks for words of wisdom.

Marty,Have you removed the metal covers?I have seen some rusted on that are very hard toget off.
If so Than you are looking at the brake drum it self. I spray PB or Liquid wrench all over the back side trying to get some into the drum. Let it sit a day or so than remove the drum nut and I tap with a hammer the drum and with 2 small pry bar wiggle the drum and most time I can get it off. I did have one so bad with the shoe stuck to the drum that I broke the shoe getting it off but I had one from a parts tractor.

I have seen the brakes so frozen, that after getting the drums off, I still had to break the shoes to get them off. You can start by flooding the drum with penetrating oil and letting it soak a while. Try to make sure the brake actuating rod is in the flat position Pulling the tractor might break the shoes loose from the drums, it might also score the drums. Failing all that, you'll need to remove the wheels and the drums and take a pry bar and hammer to the shoes.

The brake shoes are the same as the F-14 and also the F-20. They are often rusted solid onto the pivot pin at the bottom. On my O-12 the brake shoes were broken as someone trying to use the brakes had forced the top apart and the shoes had not been able to move on the pivot. The covers have often rusted away letting soil and moisture in the rust everything up.

Take the tin covers off and beat the drum with a 2 lb hammer. Sometimes it will knock the rust loose enough you can get it to roll. Good luck. I've beat the living you know what out of drums and never broken one. The shoes on the other hand are another story. They break like glass.

Thanks for the words of wisdom, just as was recommended, a few hits with the hammer got it moving...one side moved no problem, the other side needed a little persuasion!!! Ready to go up on the trailer and head out for some renovation work. Thanks for all your help!!!!
