Letter Series Rims

Were the rims painted or plated? Something sticks out in my mind that they were plated with something. I thought it might have been nickel but, I think that might have been overkill for a tractor (like hubcaps on a lawnmower ;^o ). Thanks - Mike

Originally they were galvanized, which would be zinc -- looked more to be electroplated than hot-dipped. The customary paint in lieu of such is CaseIH's Silver/Argent. Plain aluminum in other brands works, too. Just stay away from the "chromy" finishes

I always thought that originally the rims were galvanized or plated with something and NOT painted, but just in the last few days I have sanblasted and repainted 4 different farmall H and M FRONT rims. I sandblasted right down to bare metal, and did not find one trace of ANY galvanizing or other plating.
I DID find paint however. Even the INSIDE of the rims had been painted.
A couple of those rims came from Goodyear, and at least one came from Firestone.

I have painted a few Farmalls and sanded down to the steel on the rims and didnt find any zinc ,my S A was painted silver inside to

I have a '58 460, the rear rims were definitely galvanized, under the incorrect red paint the previous owner used (front wheels are one piece stamped steel painted red) My 53 Super H had front and rear galvanized, as do my other 5 letter series. I have read that IH may have had painted rims from the supplier as early as the 350/450 series. The 460 shoots that down, unless they didn't do them all the same.

Yes, when mine are sold and need to be repainted, the new owner will not find galvanized on mine either, because it has been sandblasted off. And, rust does a good job of eating the galvanizing, also. Provided yours were repainted and the painter went to bare metal, then the galvanizing is gone. I paint the inside of mine too, mainly to inhibit further rust. The inside was originally galvanized.

Our 350U with spinouts had galvanized rims (they are chloride casualties and though the centers and weights are there, the only thing left is rust and the rubber!! JimN

they were galvanized from factory. just sand blasted 2 this week, and yes, one was firestone and one goodyear stamped on the inside.
