Busted worm wheel Farmall 230, Do I need to change both gear

I just posted that I needed the wheel the other day and I just heard this yesterday. I just heard from a guy who had that worm wheel go on a JD 50 a couple years back something interesting. He had the same or less damage to the mating gear, just a touch of roughness at the very end inch of the mating steering shaft gear. He didn"t change the shaft gear and it ate the new one in very short order. How does that sound to you guys, should I change both? Essentially the very leading inch of the shaft gear is ragged for about an inch.
