Seized Engine Elixir

Has anyone tried the elixir to release seized engine that is advertized in the latest edition of Red Power?

ATF is cheap. It works. 2 stroke oil (not mixed) also has similar abilities to get into rust. Some engines have swelled up the rings and piston head from corrosion to the point that they will not break loose. JimN

One "Witches Brew" is to try a mixture of Diesel Fuel,,,,,,,,Auto Tranny Fluid,,,,,,,,Brake Fluid and let is sit in there several days...

Elixir is the correct term. Snake oil is better. Disassembly is almost always requred as even when you get the pistons out, the rings are usually seized in the piston grooves.

Your results will depend on how long the motor has been stuck and why it got stuck. Most of the concoctions the other guys have listed will work as well as the high-priced stuff that's advertised. Look at some of Old's posts about stuck engines. He has unstuck more engines than most guys will ever think of doing.

If it's seized because of a spun rod bearing you can dump all the snake oil you want it the engine and it won't do any good. Plan on taking the engine apart and fixing it right. Even if you get stuck pistons loose and the engine turning the rings are most likely to be stuck in the pistons.

I used ATF on a Farmall A back in 1975. I don't think it was ever shedded since it rolled off the assembly line. I used a piece of 2X2 oak and and a big hammer & drove out the rods & pistons. Some sleeves came out too. I use a torch to heat the sleeves to get the pistons out since I needed the old rods for the new pistons. I pulled the engine off so it was easier to work on and I steam cleaned the block too. I had the clutch disc relined at a brake shop. In the Spring of 1976 I had it finished and I plowed the garden with the 16-inch moldboard plow that came with it.

The crankshaft only needed polishing and was worn .002" and the machine shop furnished the undersize bearings. Replaced all the valves and guides and seats were ground. With a sleeve/piston kit, new tires, rims, steering wheel, seat, wiring and a set of used fenders it looked pretty good when finished. Hal

I've got a 28 hp Perkins diesel on a 15kw generator skid that hasn't run since I bought it about 30 years ago at a sale. It ran before I got it and I ran it a little. It has sat outside in the rain and snow with a gallon paint can over the exhaust stack all this time. Still would have the same oil and antifreeze in it. I just never wanted to invest in one of those huge batteries it uses and I never got around to getting an outdoor panel to put on it and never got around to adding a fuel tank on the skid.

Where would I go about adding some atf in the cylinders to sit for a couple weeks before I try anything? Pour some in the fuel line? I really don't want to pull the head without being committed to following through with it.

I don't need another project but I guess if I don't do anything, it might go another 30 years.

Thanks.

You would probably need to pull the injectors in order to pour ATF on top of the pistons. Make sure you keep the engine covered and I would mark the injectors so they so they go back on the same cylinder. Hal
