transmission puzzle, part II

Hey All,

OK so I tried a few things with my 140 to see if it"s the clutch or transmission, as suggested here (thanks Haas, Hugh & Janicholson), but still no dice. I found that one of the clutch levers had come half off and was twisted, so after spending saturday doing surgery on it, finally got that lever straight and repinned. (What a bear without taking the clutch/tractor apart)

Janicholson suggested I play w/the PTO with it in gear and not, so I did that - in gear, it just spins and the tractor doesn"t move, so I am assuming it"s either the clutch not dis-engaging (would like to lube it anyway, but can"t find the grease nipple inside the "dust cover" as per the manual - anybody got a map?), or as Hugh suggested, perhaps the transmission coupling has come off.

Hugh, have you or anyone else here attempted to get at the transmission coupling *without* splitting the tractor? Is this possible? How time consuming would you say it is to get at it?

Thanks in advance for any stories about similar problems.

Cheers
Pete in PA

I assume you put the PTO control in gear to make sure that if it was running it would spin the PTO.
If the PTO is able to spin when it is engaged and the trans is in gear, something is broken in the trans. If it spins when the gear shifter is in neutral, the coupling, clutch disk, or clutch shaft splines could be bad. You might be able to see the coupling where the clutch rod goes in (maybe) JimN

If the coupling has come off you should be able to see if the clutch shaft is turning when you spin the pto while in gear.will need 2 people to do that.

i dont think you can get to it without splitting it at the transmission.
