PTO Operation

I have an IH 2444. I noticed the PTO spinning in reverse the other day. I turned off and on the tractor and it started spinning foward again. Does this thing a have a reveres PTO operation. The IH repair manual doesn't mention it.

All you did was turn the tractor off and start it back up? Frankly, I don't buy it. You would've had to shift a gearbox to make the PTO turn the other way.

I've personally never heard of a "reversible PTO." That doesn't mean one doesn't exist, as I've certainly not seen it all yet. Odds are you don't have one, though.

Your eyes were probably playing tricks on you.

Does your PTO always run while the tractor is running? If so, that's a serious safety issue that should be fixed.

If your tractor has a forward and reverse gerbox in front of the main gearbox yes the pto will run in revers when the tractor is going backwards. MJ

I'll check the operation today in reverse and forward gears. The PTO will shut off, it has a lever on the left hand side. There is also a foot lever on the right that I cannot figure out what it does. When you push it nothing happens.
I had it in nuetral when I got off and checked it. Then I turned it off and as it slowed down it seemed to change directions as the motor stopped.
What made me check it was I was cutting grass and it was doing a lousy job. then one of the blades fell off.
I put it back on and made certain it was tight and about 5 minutes later it fell off again.
I then checked the direction the blades were turning and they were operating in reverse with the tractor in neutral.
I'll check this evening and let you know. thanks for the help.

The foot lever on the right side is the differential lock. You will not notice any effect while driving straight unless one wheel is spinning. If you are turning you will notice that both wheels are locked together causing one on them to slip.

In order for your PTO to turn backwards your tractor would have to have been altered from original production. As was stated in an earlier reply, a reverser will cause the transmission gears to turn backwards but all tractors that had the reverser also had the same PTO driveline as the ones with IPTOs. You would have to have a tractor that was built with a transmission driven PTO that had a reverser added later. In that case you should also have a reverse gear in the transmission. If you put the reverser in reverse and then shifted the transmission into reverse, you could get a PTO that ran backward while the tractor would still go forward.

I have tried, but have been unable to duplicate what happened. It does not have a reverser though. not sure what happened, but I am certain it was spinning the wrong way. I'll keep my eye on it. Thanks for the help. It's nice to know what the other pedal is for.
