M serial no idle questions

I just bought a great 1945 (I think) M. The serial number was on a plate on the clutch housing and is 7-9855X1. Does that make the serial no. to be 79855? What is the X1 designation?

It starts with a quick bump to the starter and just purrs. Amazing for a 64 yr old machine. But, it does not run up many RPMs. Is that normal, or is there an adjustment on the carb?

It has a narrow front end, but I think I am going to leave it as is. It turns like it had power steering.

Does anyone have any suggestions on a 3-point? Where would be the best place to buy one and about how much? I see them for about $350 on the internet.

I REALLY like this tractor.

They run pretty slow. 1750RPM (stamped into the ID plate under the serial number) wide open no load.
This is called High Idle. If in doubt, rent a strobe tach, or a shaft tach. The strobe is shined on the front pulley and a knob is adjusted until the pulley appears to stop. The RPM is then read on a scale. A shaft tach is used on the PTO and 540RPM is the desired RPM at High Idle. I like Saginaw Brand 3 point hitches. X1 means it was designed to run on gasoline only. Using Unleaded regular is just fine. do not put in additives. No issues have been noted on these tractors, even with 10% ethanol. JimN

Hey JimN,

May I respectfully disagree with you on one point. 540 RPM at the PTO is full load engine speed of 1450 RPM. Stock high idle is 1595 RPM which will give 590 RPM at the PTO
