450 Hydraulics are getting hot!

Have a 56 450 with hydro touch. I drove it over to work on it yesterday and the hydraulics got real warm. I have cleaned and changed the breather, but what else could it be? Is there a pressure releif that is sticking and causing it to get warm? Any help would be greatly appreciated!! Thank you

John: Hot compared to what? These 300, 400, 350 and 450 run quite hot on hydraulics. Very small reservoir for that system. Been more than one farmer arrived home for lunch with burns on arms from touching those lines. Remember I'm talking about these tractors as new, 50 odd years ago.

Now, if your familiar with those tractors and comparing hot to another 300, 350, 400 or 450, then it could be serious.

Hydraulics get hot enough to have hydraulic oil come out through the breather and make a big mess. Every nut and bolt and hydraulic line were very warm when we started to take it apart to split it. Have to fix ta and put a new clutch in for pulling.

Kind of late to check if you have it partly apart, but sounds like system is staying on demand, in other words deadheaded, going over relief valve. Usual cause is plugged orfice screen in regulator valve assembly or one of the single to double change stems have been turned too far, broken or bent roll pin on the stop. Many ways to check to see if it staying on demand, easiest is to pull or push one of the hyd levers that have nothing hooked to them and see if you can notice system going on demand then or if it is always on.

My hot hydraulics was due to a deadheaded valve. More precisely, the selector was halfway between single- and double-acting. Fixed that with new roll pins for the detents. Then I replaced the regulator/priority valve assembly to get the PS workin. Replaced the main hyd. lines because the originals were leaking. Of course, this was all after I replaced the super-leaky pump. My 450 has good hydraulics with around $1200 worth of parts. Man, that is a depressing thought.

Doing a little research on my 450 with what I thought was more of a serious problem than what it may really be. Glad to read that these pumps will get hot as Hugh described above. Glad to also see Pete23's response about the orifice screen being plugged causing this problem.

Mainly because when I pulled my orifice plug on regulator/safety valve, the screen was completely flat and I'm sure stopped completely up.

Luckily I have a parts 450 here and pulled the orifice plug on it and the screen looks nice and round and brand new. I'm letting it soak in gas overnight, but I'm going to put it back in and hopefully things will work a little better.

My main problem is steering not working exactly like it should. Nothing out of the ordinary for what I've read on these tractors. 2 pt comes up and down just fine regardless of how long it runs. Hydraulic valves seem to operate as they should by loading the engine when engaged and being able to notice when they return to neutral position.
