Have had one of these on my SMTA for several years and it has been trouble free. Today I was pulling a 12 foot swather in fairly heavy hay, a load for the tractor. The tractor started to miss under load, but would run fine with no load. I checked a number of possibilities, cleaned the inside of the distributor and all. When I started it up again it would run for 2 to 3 minutes under load without missing. I realized if I just shut the tractor off for about 1/2 minute, then restarted it it would also run for the same time. I decided it was the ignitor unit in the distributor. When I changed back to the points and condenser the tractor ran fine. Is this a common way the units fail? This tractor sits much more than it runs so wondering if I would be better off to just stay with the points. How often do these units fail like this?
