specific name of this part for an H

Hey guys after you pull the brake cover off and then the "wheel" where the break band touches, after that is the cast piece that is held on by 6 or so bolts then you take 2 of them and screw them back in to act as a puller. it also houses the bearing for the differential this cast piece is on both sides. mine is broke and i need to get another. What is the correct term for this piece? thanks in advance

Bull Pinion Bearing Carrier. They break because the bull gears must be removed before pulling them out. The gear is pretty easy to remove, but not obviously needed to be moved. Thus people break the carrier. There must be 50 posts (search for archives) on how to get the bull gears back away from the pinion without pulling the top cover. JimN

Thank you Jim! mine was broke just as you explain, (I didnt do it) and luckily I had a parts one, however I also did just as you said. Now lookin back I see exactly what happened..I guess thats why they say live and learn!

Engineers sometimes make things that should be straight forward into a nightmare. To replace a set of alternator brushes in a Honda Civic I used to own the directions said (remove left front wheel and tire. Remove lower ball joint. Remove left axle. Loosen alternator and remove through this hole. (the firewall was indented 1/2 inch in one irrelevant location (with a big hammer and a drift punch)and the alternator came right out the top. JimN

Hi JimN: Quite often it is Management that demands a basic design be "frozen" there after engineers have major problems. Been there, seen that... at Collins Rockwell R&D lab back in the '60s. ag

Ha Ha things are funny like that arent they Jim! I am constantly reading these forums daily since I have began work on this tractor and should have searched this topic before trying to take my spare one off. Now its broke. so i am in search, -or- my question to you now is can i still use my parts rear end and take the bull gear off the other side and use the bull pinion bearing carrier from the other side? They look the same. One good thing is that both tranny covers are off. Thanks for your help.

I agree. Sunk costs and amortization of capacity.
Examples abound. Solid rear axles on US cars when they were such a ride and handling limiting factor. Flat head anything, and 2 speed automatics.
Gag me. Jim

Check the part number. caseih.com then select North America, then at the top Parts and service, select search for parts, then begin your search here, then put in the word Farmall. Then select H from the list. Then chassis. Then differential to get to the part numbers. JimN

Yup. The problem is that the engineers will modify a hundred things that end up better then the previous design, then they get one wrong that causes a problem. Management only remembers the one failure and says "No more". So we're all stuck with things that could easily have been corrected.
