VR stops charging when Cap is installed

Ok guys I have talked with several of you before and I do not want to here to go through the trouble shooting guide I have it and its helpful.
But I remember Janicholson telling me how to adjust my VR by adjusting the spring tension on the little coil to change the charging output.
Anyway I installed an aftermarket generator/hyd unit all in one on my Farmall A. Its an old Chrylser generator with HYd to lift the old convertable tops. Anyway that doesn't matter. I installed a VR that I had and it once I pulled the cap and adjust the spring tension it started charging at about 12amps. I installed the cover and it stops charging, take cover off it charges. I remember Janicholson telling me the cover may cause the magnatism to change. Is there anything I can do so that when I have the cover on the vr will work?
Thanks for any help.

The problem may be the coil with the heavy contacts (cutout relay) it has a pull in winding with fine wires, and a heavy current winding with thick wires. If the pull in voltage is too high with the cap on, it will not pull in.
Thus just barely weaken the spring on that relay so it pulls in a bit easier. The other coil adjusts the voltage when charging. If you have been making it tighter, that is not the answer. You may need to put it back to where it was.
If when you loosen the other (cutout spring) too much, it will not cutout when the tractor is shut off, and the tractor will then discharge the battery rapidly into a smoking generator.
