1941 H. The oil in the rear end is a black oil,it does not smell like 80/90 or 90/140 oil. What is it?

What is it? It's OLD 40's era gear lube!

When I drained from the tranny/rear end of my '47 Minnie Mo U (what I suspect was the original factory fill) it came out jet black. The stuff was so stiff it would barely flow - took 2 days for it to drain completely.

For your H drain out what's in there, flush it with kerosene or diesel if it looks REALLY nasty inside then refill with fresh 80W/90.

Tip: Be prepared before you drain it! If the transmission is full you'll get about 7 gallons from it.

like bob said, its old oil. before you drain it, dump 2 gallons of kerosene in there and run it around for a day or 2. the kerosene will thin out the gear oil some and get some of the gook loosened up.

The lube might be something like Mobil 600W. I don't think the "W" meant weight. It was just their product code.

However, the oil was thick and black. It was the recommended lube for my 1924 Graham Bros Truck. A similar product was in my Farmall 400. It was so thick that the TA wouldn't work. It took several days to get the oil out even after heating my shop to 90 degrees and placing two infrared heaters in close proximity to the rear frame. I replaced the oil with tractor fluid and the TA now works good. It seems highly unlikely that IH would have recommended that oil for TA equipped tractors.

Sometimes old habits die hard. The original owner probably thought he was doing right by the tractor. I was surprised that the old oil formulations were still generally available in the mid fifties.
