M muffler question

Ok. So this isn't the most exciting question, but, the sleeve that holds the muffler onto the manifold stack cracked. So my muffler falls off. where can i get a new sleeve? i can find mufflers and rain caps all over, but not the dang sleeve.

thanks

The manifold (if a Distillate) has a stack bolted to the top. If it is a gasoline (or has had a gasoline manifold put on it, it will have a 2" piece of black iron pipe (about 12 inches long) screwed into it. This pipe has the muffler placed over it with a muffler clamp (standard 2-3/8" auto type clamp) squeezing it to the pipe. That is all there is to the system originally! JimN

If you mean the original clamp, Mark's tractors, Carter and Gruenewald and possibly OEM Tractor Parts has them. The muffler does not have anything called a sleeve. You can also use an ordinary muffler clamp. Not original, but it works.

M's had two types of exhaust pipe, the straight gassers used 2" black iron schedule 40 pipe about 8-10 inches long and the all-fuel types had a flanged cast iron stack that bolted to the manifold top surface transitioning into a 2 3/8ths o.d. cylinder as it came through the hood. It was about 8 inches tall on am M as I recall. Several different shaped mufflers were used through the years, the last ones were very similar to the Stanley type you can buy at various farm stores, except the last straight M mufflers had a reduced diameter outlet pipe that was about 2" o.d. in contrast to the Stanley types that have the outlet pipe the same diameter as the inlet which is like the original Super M type muffler. The original muffler clamps were a flat strap type clamp tightened by use of a 3/8ths carriage bolt, lockwasher and nut. OEM, Steiner's, Mark's Tractor, and several other parts suppliers have these original type clamps. Mark's Tractor is about the only supplier I know of that has the correct original type M muffler......and it ain't cheap at 79 bucks a copy.

Carter and Gruenewald now has the original type muffler, I think about $95. I have two of Marks mufflers, the sound is like I remember from the 50's.

thanks guys. it looks like the previous owner must have modified my muffler assembly. I need a new muffler, so i will take a look at a couple of those places mentioned. but I might choke on some of them prices. Yikes.
