CRACK follow up

A few months I posted that my '48 S/A had a noise in the transmission that had been preceded by a sharp CRACK sound, I had looked at the gears but didn't see anything wrong. I had later drained the grease (and water) but didn't get back to it until yesterday.
I removed the cover again & looked some more. Still looked OK. I turned the engine about 1/8th of a rotation & looked again. Sticking out rearward from the oil slinger gear was what looked like a small pin. When I put my finger on it it fell to the bottom of the case. After several attempts at retrieval I gave up.
I added the proper amount of gear grease & put the cover back on.
I then started the engine & there was NO NOISE.
I guess it's fixed. I looked at the bottom side of the cover but couldn't see where that "pin" could have come from.

Several of you had given your thoughts on what might have been wrong & for that I thank you all.

Some playing around with an extend-o-magnet might be able to retrieve the piece.

Not knowing what kind of bearings might be used in the SA transmission, I have seen an under-lubricated tapered roller bearing cone wear out the "organizer cage" which keeps the tapered rollers separated and inline.

This was not good as all the rollers then shifted to one side, some fell sideways and this all wedged under power and about 100:1 gear reduction (this was on the output shaft of a factory gearbox).

The bad news upon teardown was that the wedging force was strong enough to blow apart the end-case casting with 4 large cracks.

Sorry for a horror story, I hope yours is better than that, but bearings all need lube!
