H carb prob

I recently had the carb rebuilt on a 44 H and while it was off, I flushed the gas tank and line and dried thoroughly. When reinstalled, it ran great for about 15 minutes and now will only run with starting fluid to the breather. Gas runs well from the line at the carb. Thinking it was probably some old trash in the carb, I had the guy open it up again and it checked out fine and after installation again, I have the same problem. Any ideas what to check next? Thanks.

Does gas drip from carb if choked heavily when cranked?? Sounds like float sticking closed or needle valve problem ? My 2 cents! John

I'd be discussing this with the rebuider, not here. I've sold some very expensive rebuilt +restored perfection H carbs on the internet with one year warantee, and never had a call back.

I rebuilt my H's carb a few years ago. I also replaced the metal fuel line with rubber and put a pretty fine inline fuel filter downstream from the sediment bowl. I've never had to clean it out but at least it removes the question of more gunk getting to the carb. I also put a big 2" magnet in the gas tank right next to the fuel outlet. These probably won't fix your current problem but are offered as good health tips for older fuel systems.

When we put the new to us, rebuilt carb on our '40 H I replaced the fuel filter someone installed years ago..

It would run for a few seconds (ok, maybe 20 or so) then die..

It wouldn't start again until I put a little pressure into the tank (I put a hose in there, covered the open with a rag and blew into the tank).. The tractor would start and run for another 20 seconds or so...

I read a post on here (I think in the archives) about being careful with fuel filters and many aren't designed for gravity fed systems. I took the filter off and viola.. its runs great now.

If you remove the plug in the bottom of the carb. with the gas on do you get a good strong flow? Not just for a few seconds, but for maybe a minute or two.Just another problem I have had with a new kit in an H carb.does the needle have neoprene tip or is the needle all brass? If it has a neoprene tip try an all brass needle.Good luck with that carb.I had trouble with one a few years ago and I just keep at it and finally got it.Went to this forum many times with not much help back.SORRY guys but that is the way it went.

An all brass needle? No such thing ever existed for an H carb, and the all steel needles are obsolete and unavailable.

The trick is to thoroughly CLEAN both the viton tipped needle AND the brass seat BEFORE you install them.

YES, even a brand new, right out of the package needle and seat need to be CLEANED with aerosol carburetor cleaner.
