Super A smoking at start up

I have a 47 Super A that smokes a lot at start up. After about 20 to 30 seconds it clears up and you do not see any additional smoke. This leads me to believe that the oil is leaking down the valve guides.
Have not done a compression test on the tractor.
Does this mean I need to grind the valves and have the seals on the valve guides done.
What are the recommendations on correcting this?

Unless they were added later, there are no valve seals, only guides.

A little smoke at startup is normal. 20 - 30 seconds seems a little long, but if it runs good and has good compression, I wouldn't worry about it.

Look at the bright side: you can be sure that the valve stems are getting lubricated.

marvintj: Dave is right, he just prooves what I'm always saying, "No other tractor out there talks to you like a Super A."

My SA (1953) lets out a plume of smoke on start-up and then emits an exhaust as clear as a bell. Has consumed less than 1/2 qt. oil in two years - and that includes some minor drip from the front seal area. Not a concern to me.... mike
