H block cracked in dry sleeve bore

First, I am a Deere guy working on my Fathers H. This is the second block because the first one was total junk. Had to heat up the sleeves to get them out. Pulled the dry sleeves out, and the bores they go into clacked about 1.25 inches above the bottom of the bore. I am sick and tired of dealing with junk. Is this common for a dry sleeve engine to crack. Can I weld the bore, grind it down, and put a new sleeve in? Or just junk this block too??? Anyone have a running H engine around Milwaukee Wisconsin??? I need to have this running in about one month.

Thanks,

Will

you probably cracked the block by localized heating with a torch. when the sleeves won't come out of a block you weld beads rapidly up the block and the sleeves will come out easily then.

The correct cure for this is to have that hole bored and a repair sleeve presed i and then bore the repair sleeve to take the stock sleeve this is no big deal as i have done a few this way for yeas and it works well and she is still a usable block for many years . It is not uncommon for them to crack like this as it really is a stress crack again not a big deal

It is not common, but happens from either freezing, or heat (possibly the heat you used to remove them) If originally cracked, they would be tough to get out from rust between the sleeve, and the block bore. Tractor Vet is correct on the repair sleeve, but these engine blocks should be pretty common. all the way from H, SH, 300, and 350 used the same basic block. (displacement went up each step, but parts bolt on the block) I would get a good starter block and go from there. JimN
