super c has no spark from coil

super c will not produce a spark from the coil. I have put in new points, condenser, rotor and cap and plugs and new wires. Is there a way to test the coil? This is a 12 volt conversion that has set for a spell.

Connect a 12 Volt test light between chassis ground and the primary terminal on the distributor.

Turn on the ignition switch and try to start the engine.

What is the test light doing while you crank the engine with the starter... always "ON", always "OFF" or "FLASHING" as the points open and close?

I put a 12 volt test light from the terminal on the outside of the distributer to a good ground. the light was always off. When I open the points with a screwdriver I do get a spark there. thanks

The light is always "OFF", even while cranking?

If the points are opening and closing as they should the light should be flashing.

Yet, when you manually open the points you get a spark?

If everything you have posted is a correct observation, the point must be gapped so as NOT to open (and close) during cranking???

How big a spark should I get at the points when I open them manually? I will check the gap at the points after work Tuesday. thanks for your help.

Gap is .020 when the distributor (four lobe) cam is on the top of a lobe. (move the fan to adjust the engine location (Ignition off). The spark is just a noticeable small spark at the points. JimN

the points had no gap, napa specials. when you tighten them down they move every time and always the wrong way. did a bench test on the trouble light. it doesn't work after all. I gapped the points and it still wouldn't fire but I noticed the coil got real hot. tomorrow I will get a new coil and trouble light and try it again
