Slow cranking

Buckwheat 50

I have a '56 Farmall 100 that is cranking slow. New battery and starter. The wires and switch heat up quick while cranking so there must be resitance somewhere. What should I look at?

Buckwheat: You don't say what voltage, 6 or 12? Sounds like a 6 volt with auto parts store cables. 6 volt systems require 00 or 01 gauge cables to carry the amperage. Amperage is what is causing your cables to heat.

Go to a truck or heavy equipment shop, buy a set of good heavy cables, probably cost $25.

If you're like most people you probably didn't look at the end of the ground cable that's attached to the tractor. It's probably all rusty and corroded.

The resistance is causing the heat, so if it was me I'd find the hottest point and start there. If your cables are hot then replace them. Sam

Clean and shiny is the order of the day. It's a good idea for any electrical connection, but is critical on high-amp applications like your starter.

Check that the ground connection is bright (both the chassis and the terminal) and the same for the starter end. On the battery end, make sue that both that everything is nie an d bright there, ans look over the ends of your cables for any sign of corrosion having gotten into the strands of the cable. That's a common weak point.

If you do find some supect cotrrosion to clean up, , do so and then try again with what you have. If it's still heating up, you may need to consider heavier cables.

One other possibility is to have a look at your ammeter -- you don't have a dead short going elsewhere on the tractor do you?

dougie: Don't bet all your wealth on that, the others all make good points. Another item I might add at this point, go to cast for your ground. There has been more troubles with that ground strap bolted to top of dash or battery box, than a dog has flees.
