Stuck Bolts

S/C BOB

I went to install the pto shield on my S/C Farmall and the two bottom bolts are stuck and seem to just want to break off I ve tried hitting with a hammer and soaking. Any other tricks from the EXPERTS and as always thanks for all the help. Bobby

Use a good torch and heat them. If the heads are twisted off and there's still enough of the bolt sticking out you can weld a hex nut through the center of the nut to the bolt. Then see if they can be removed. Hal

Heat them red hot, then quench them with a hose. (tough on paint if it is to be saved) They usually turn out after that. Tighten each just enough to stretch the bolt a tiny bit (no more than seeing the wrench move) this also assists in freeing the threads, remember a bolt with its head on is far easier to remove than a broken off shank! Seems like an odd place to find stuck bolts. I'll take a wild guess that the shanks of the bolts are stuck to the PTO housing rather than the threads in the main housing. If you twist them of off, you will probably just get the bolt heads and the PTO housing will still be stuck to the bolts.

I'd consider doing the heat/cool cycle then soaking in penetrant for a few days. Then put an impact wrench on low power and just rattle them both directions until I got tired of holding the wrench.

I have very good luck doing the following. heat around the stuck bolts then find an old wax candle and put the candle on the area let cool and most times it will then screw out easily

If the bolts in question are the ones I think they are, they reach about 3 inches through the PTO housing. I have never seen anything seep or wick in anythere near that distance. That is why I think heat cycling and vibration are required on this one.

All good ideas going here. Something you brought up got me thinking, Jim. Those two lower bolts holding the shield on are two of those that actually hold the entire PTO assembly on. If they twist off at the head, he could still just remove the entire PTO assembly and treat any twisted off bolt like a stud. And I'm with you on these probably being stuck nearer the top that on the thread.

Heat is still the best first option in my book. And JimN's trick of giving her a nudge in the tightening direction has worked more than once.

here is another trick that a machinist showed me last week. had to replace hydraulic fittings on the drive motors of my hustler ztr. it had a snowblower on it in the winters, and the salt ate up the fittings. he sandblasted around the base of the fitting where it goes into the motor, it opened up the "pores" for lack of a better work and got the penetrating oil to soak in.
