M Charging Problem...mounting frustration!

I have a 1950 M. Still set up with the standard 6 volt, positive ground..full stock system.
The ammeter has been fluttering, and the tractor has been producing VERY little charge.
I have done the following things.
Replaced ALL wiring
Had Generator rebuilt (and then checked again when the first rebuild made no change)
Bought new voltage regulator
Bought new battery
I had a friend who is a professional mechanic working on antique farm equipment come by today...and we isolated each part, and cannot for the life of us find out why its not charging. A volt meter hooked up to the battery shows between 6.2 and 6.35...my friends feeling was that it should be reading more like 8.5.
Is there something incredibly stupid we are overlooking? The tractor is my main motive power for my farming operation, and I'm tight on cash. Help!

Have you grounded the field terminal while tractor is running? If it charges with field grounded, look for regulator problems or wiring between gen & reg. Is there a good ground on the regulator frame, generator, & battery?

Try my Troubleshooting Procedure, especially Para 5 to see if its a Genny versus a VR problem and check simple things again first like good grounds on BOTH the Genny and VR and be sure to Polarize the genny BEFORE start up.

One thing that came up reading your troubleshooting.
I had the generator rebuilt, and at the time, the shop said it WAS bad (and the thing was charging fine before!)
Once I got it back and rewired it with the old VR, it wouldn't work, so I got a new voltage regulator. The difference is this new VR had 4 posts (three on the side, one underneath). The old one just had three. Now, on the ammeter, it still has the wire from the ammeter to the lights. Should this be removed since it now has a wire to the lights on the VR? Could that cause this problem?

NO, I dont think thats the problem. It should still charge regardless if loads are fed from LOAD on a 4 terminal VR or the Load side (same side that wires to BAT on the VR) of an ammeter. The ammeters SUPPLY terminal has the wire to the battery/starter while its other LOAD terminal wires to BAT on the VR PLUS feeds loads like lights and ignition, unless its a 4 terminal VR in which case loads are fed from the VR's L terminal.....If I had a 4 terminal VR with the LOAD terminal I would feed lights n ignition off it versus the ammeter, but it will still work if you ignore the L terminal.

On many 4 terminal VR's the 3 terminals side by side are BAT LOAD FLD while the one on one side or the bottom by itself is the ARM/GEN terminal GOT IT WIRED CORRECT???

Run the Para 5 VR by pass tests and the Para 8 motor tests may help diagnose the problem

Right now the lights are feeding from both the ammeter and the VR. Thats not the source of the problem correct? I will keep going over your sheet and investigating

I wouldnt want any load (such as lights or ignition) feeding from BOTH the load side of ammeter PLUS plus the VR's LOAD terminal !!!!!!!!!!!!!!! That would mean the VR's LOAD terminal and the ammeters Load terminal and the VR's BAT are all hooked together if I'm understaiding you correctly am I ??????????

Id want them only fed from one place, EITHER the VR LOAD terminal (my preference) or else the load (NOT battery/starter) side of the ammeter

BAT on VR wires to Load (NOT batery/starter)
side of ammeter....

GEN/ARM on VR wires to gennys ARM post

FLD on VR wires to gennys FLD post

Loads like lights and ignition wire to LOAD on VR or else the ammeteres load terminal but NOT to both

I THINK, that was the problem.
I tested with the voltmeter at the battery now and I'm getting 7.0-7.5...and when I turn the lights on its not sucking down on the charge any longer. Time will tell if I get a good charge while I'm out baling, but I think I've got it straightened out. Thank you for your help!
