Mag or Carb?

I"ve got a 1945 BN that runs great. But it"s hard starting. sometimes it starts right up, and other times the gas will be running right on the ground from being choked to much and it won"t fire at all. Ironically, if I remove the air cleaner cover and put my hand over the air cleaner stack, she starts right up.

I"m leaning towards thinking that the Spark is weak, and m extra choking is forcing it to fire on one of the outer cylinders that migh not have had fuel, because she belches black smoke after starting. It also starts quickly when I roll start it. Is magman a good person to have rebuild it?

Take Care,
Steve

Yes, and the Magman is right up there in your neck of the woods.

Also, be very stingy with that choke rod. These old Farmalls just plain don't require much choking.

It easy to check your spark. Just take an old plug and gap it out at about 3/16 of an inch. Lay it on the block some place and spin it over. You need a blue/white spark that will jump that gap. If it doesn't jump that gap or it is yellow looking you have a spark problem. And yes magman does a good jump on mags or at least that is what I have heard from this forum
