Farmall 656 doesn't start- could it be a stuck clutch?

Hi-

I have a Farmall 656 Gas that sat over the winter and now will not start. When the attempting to start I hear the starter motor make a banging sound like it's bumping hard into a stopped gear. The battery is fully charged but it does not turn the engine over... just bangs then makes an unfortunate buzzing sound.

My suspicion is that the clutch is not working and the tractor is stuck in a higher gear.

When I follow the clutch linkage back it does not appear to transmit the pedal movements back to the clutch compartment. And right at the connection to the clutch casing there is a rubber seal that has fallen apart and come off. Any ideas? Should I take the clutch apart or is it unrelated? Perhaps it is time to have it towed to the local tractor repair shop?

Thanks for any suggestions.

The engine could be rust stuck, or hydro locked. If a head gasket were leaking, a cylinder can fill with coolant. They will not turn compressing liquid.
Pull the spark plugs and see if there is anything in the holes. If not try it W/O plugs. (ground the coil wire).
In neutral, it should turn clutch or not. JimN

Pull the plugs as Jim suggested and see if any coolant is on top of the pistons. If its dry its probably stuck. I would pour ATF on top all the pistons and let it sit and soak for a few days. Then just bump the starter and see it will free up. If you can get a bore scope light then you look in each cylinder to see how rusty they are.
You may need to pull the head & pan and use a piece of 2 X 2 oak and a big hammer & try to drive the rod & piston out. Hal

A bad battery cable or other connection will cause the starter to click/bang, but not turn the engine over.

Put the tractor in Neutral, and it won't matter if the clutch is working or not. You don't need the clutch to shift while the tractor is not running.
