686 Power and Tires

I just got a 2 Row Strip Tillage Implement. The largest tractor I have is a 686 with 15.5 38s. I was pretty sure the 686 would be a little shy on power, but the 966 I have borrowed hardly notices the load. So now I think the 686 has a fighting chance. I will need to up size the tires to at least 16.9s to get the implement out of the ground. From previous posts it seems like 16.9s are a good match on a 686 for power/traction, are 18.4s too much tire? What type of tire would be recommended for tillage, spraying and other all around chores?

Nothing wrong with the 15.5's. My 666 had 15.5 tires but I went to 16.9's when I replaced them. I can see no real difference in pulling ability.

I have 18.4x38 radials on my 686 and I really like them. Gives an excellent ride and it has never lacked the power for those tires.

Stigmont: I went from 15.5x38 to 16.9x38 on my 656 and 560, did it mainly to give better rear end clearence. At the time I also went from chloride filled 15.5x 38 to no chloride in the 16.9x38. Yes it did make a huge difference. With 15.5 on the 656 I never gave a thought to hooking up to 5x16 semi-mount plow. After the change to 16.9, all I ever plowed with was 656.

I don't think you want chloride in there, 16.9 and 18.4 hold a lot of chloride. It will rob the 686 of too much power. I noticed this in my change from 15.5 to 16.9, tractors were much more lively and resopnsive, didn't leave near as many wheel tracks in soft ground. I noticed the same going from single, chloride filled, 20.8x38, to dual, air only, 20.8x38 on 1066. I takes hard ground to take advantage of all that added weight.

16.9's should match up well with a 686's power. And they can fit right on your existing rims without raising your drawbar too much or screwing up the gearing a lot.
