1066 Transmission Noise

The 1066 I just bought whines when the tractor is moving. If you start out at idle, is is more of a growl and when you speed it up it quiets down to just a whine. I want to say that it is a little quieter in either high, low, or reverse but I don't remember which.

What problems could this be pointing to or is this normal for a tractor this old with those gears.

The TA had recently been replaced but I am not aware of any other transmission work that has been done.

Is there anything transmission wise that you can do without splitting the tractor apart or is every repair a major one?

Thanks!

Jeff

It vary well could be that since it has had a recent T/A job that whoever did it did not get it set up wright and has the lower shaft either to loose or over tightened , may not have taken the time to shim properly But this is a guess as i can not here what whine it is making and there is nothing you can do about it with out taking it all apart and checking EVERYTHING . Installing a T/A correctly takes someone that really knows what he is doing , As i have seen enough bad jobs in my time . There is a lot of work in it and myself i hate doing something over so when i do one everything is checked and double checked .

Thanks Vet, If was a bad TA job is it just a matter of time before something wears out and breaks or is it just annoying to have to listen to the whine?

Can you tell by listening to it where the problem might be or do you have to tear it apart to find out?

If the noise started when the TA was replaced it is possible that you have gears that mesh together that do not the the correct tooth angle. Originally this series transmissions (starting with the 706/806) were made with gears with 20 degree pressure angle on the teeth. A change was made to 25 degree teeth to eliminate some of the noise. Running one of each will cause noise.

It is also possible that the MCV was installed with the thin gaskets when it need the thick ones. That will cause the hydraulic pump gears to be too tight.
