International 684 PTO Speeds

I am a farmer and I have an International 684 tractor.

Is anyone aware if this tractor has provision for, or is possible of running the PTO speed at 540 rpm and/or 1,000 rpm? My tractor is a 540 rpm unit, but am looking to see if it is possible for interchangeability to both speeds.

The Operators Manual I have (which covers models from 484, 584, 684, 784 & 884) states that the "784 & 884 will have 2 shafts..... the lower .... a speed of 1000 & the upper shaft.... a speed of 540 rev/min". Don't know, however, if the 684 could be retrofitted with this setup. Perhaps Bernard or JimB2 will reply to your question.

This is an over-simplification but technically you already have a 1000 rpm shaft. the pto clutch output shaft spins at 1000 rpm and the 540 shaft is driven from it off an idler gear at the rear. However, your 1000 shaft is a shortened shaft that needs to be replaced with one having the spline at the rear. from looking at the parts diagrams, the parts should easily interchange, but the labor involved i am unsure of.
parts should be available, as the same tractor design was carried into the IH684, caseih 685 and 695 and possibly newer.
the 1000 rpm shaft would come out below the 540 shaft at the 3 bolt cover similar to the flange for your 540 shaft.
