140 IH year switched to Alternator???

Does anyone know the year the 140 IH tractor was switched to an alternator? I have seen a 1977 model with a factory Alternator but I am not sure how many years earlier had it? Thanks

I suspect that Hugh is correct. Cubs first used alternator as a running change during 1976 production year.
I suspect that the change was because Delco finally stopped making the old style generator. Perhaps IH had a contract for certain number of units and Delco discontinued the generators when the contract was fulfilled. Delco was then owned by GM. GM vehicles switched entirely to alternators, mostly with external regulator, about 1963 and by 1974, switched to the alternators with internal regulator.

MF: My figures are coming right from the IH Blue Ribbon Service Manual. During the 21 year production tun of 140s there were 4 different wiring and electrical systems, and this manual shows each, and giving a serial number breakdown of each. Just checked again 57724 is the number for beginning of alternator.

The IH Parts Catalog agrees with the serial number break Hugh quoted from the Service Manual. There is some chance the IH manuals all have the wrong serial number but it isn't very likely. That particular tractor may have been changed some time in the last 33 years. Did you get the date code from the generator tag?

If the original Delco id tag is on the generator, it will have 2 things stamped into it. They will be the part number (7 digits) followed by a date code (4 digits and letters).

Maybe it is February 15, 1952.

2 - year, 1932, 1942, 1952, 1962 etc. You get the idea.
B - month, February. Can be A through M, I was not used.
15- day, 15th of the month.

Few entire Delco units stayed in the book for 10 years, so usually you can figure out which decade it was from.

MF: In the 7 years or so since I got this Blue Ribbon Service Manual, I've probably dealt with 50 140s. This is the first time anyone ever questioned the 4 different electrical schematics, and the time change, used on 140s. Even though many had been changed to 12 volt alternator, or something else since new, evidence was there indicating the tractor was as the book called it, when new. I suspect if you look hard enough, you'll find the same.

(quoted from post at 21:40:22 06/01/09) That is interesting. I looked at one today that has a serial number 57855 J which has a generator on it. I wonder why?
Look very closely. Could it be 57655?
