Generator charging questions, Update 2, ?? for Hugh

After searching the archives some, I wonder if it would be money better spent to change out the generator for an alternator instead of replacing the voltage regulator. I don't see the need to go to 12V because of all of the lights needing to be changed and they all work okay now.

I know that Hugh praises his alternator on the tractor still running 6 volts.

I have searched the net and 1 of the 1st sites that pops up is in Michigan (search 6 volt alternator). They has new Delco 6V one wire alternators, both neg gnd & pos gnd, in the $130 to $140 range. The new V/R is going to be about $60.

Just curious Hugh: is your 6V tractor pos gnd or neg gnd?

Other thoughts & or suggestions also welcome.

Thanks in advance as usual

Edward

Just got a new voltage regulator from Tornholms Ag service (Rusty Farmall)for $ 47 incl shipping. 6 volt pos ground. Came in three days. A lot cheaper than an alternator and rewiring. Henry

Edward: My 6 volt alternator is 3 wire, same Delco alternator most folks are using on 12 volt conversions.

The day I needed it, I had just installed a new 6 volt battery. I went to the field doing row crop cultivation, all of a sudden I realized the Super A generator was on fire. I got the fire out, removed the generator belt and headed home. When I got to the auto electric rebuilder, I asked what was quick. He said, " Quick with that old generator is 2 weeks as I don't have the parts. Quick with a GM Delco alternator will be 5 min. as I only need to change the internal regulator from 12 volt to 6 volt."

He was right, I was out of there in 5 min., same price as a 12 volt alternator. That was almost 20 years ago. Took me longer to change the generator mount to accomodate the alternator, than changing that regulator.

My Super A was changed to negative ground, alternator is 3 wire and I use a push buttom to excite the alternator. That original battery went 13 years after the generator caught fire. I've been very satisfied with the 6 volt alternator. I am now still on my second battery.

IF IT IS A WORKING TRACTOR CONVERT TO GM ALTERNATOR WITH BUILT IN REG. CHANGE OUT THE LIGHTS TO SEAL BEAMS. YOU WILL HAVE TO GET A DIFFERENT ING. SW.

Thank you Henry. Those regulators are selling nearly as fast as I can order them in.
