trans rear gear oil levels famall A 1942

FARMALL A 1942 High crop ...Someone please tell me how to check gear level in rear & trans I can not find full level plug & final drives. This tractor has belly mower & 90 degree pto drive for v belt . this drive sounds noisey but i have used it for 2 year that way, are they all noisey?.... Thanks BOB AL.

Transmission oil level is checked at a the plug on the left-hand side of the transmission, toward the front of it. The plug will be almost hidden by the left-side brake rod. If you take the plug out and a little oil seeps out, it is OK.

There is no separate level check for the PTO, it shares oil with the transmission.

The final drive oil level is checked at a plug on the inside of the drive, toward the front, just above the oil pan. It takes a square 1/2" or 9/16" plug to remove it, I usually use a 1/2" drive socket extension. It is also where you add oil to the final drive.

On older tractors I add STP. Helps when gears wear and get to much lash. There maybe water in there also. You might need to pull the drain plug and see what comes out. I think the STP coats the gears better than just oil.

Bob,
I have a 40 A and a 53 Super A, not high clears, I have Woods L59s on both and the mower bracket covers the final drive check/fill plugs. So you may have to remove that bracket to get at them.
