hydraulic pump 656 farmall

I have a 656 with a fairly weak hydraulic pump.Its never been changed in the 25 years I have had it. It is very slow to pick up the corn planter at the end of the rows, and will barely pick up a 1500 round bale. I was wondering how much difference a new pump would make on that tractor, or is that system just slow anyway?

A new pump would make a big difference, if that is your problem, a 656 should lift a corn planter with no trouble.

I would check things such as screen, valves, and filter out first. That tractor has 2 pumps. One for the 3 point hitch and another for everything else. Not likely both pumps would be bad at the same time. Is the planter 3 point or a trailing planter lifted with a cylinder?

That system is not slow at all. One of the best 3 point lifts on any tractor when working right.

Thanks for the help. The planter is a 4 row JD 7000 on a lift cylinder. Didn't know the tractor had two pumps. Will check the filter.
