'39 M lid on left. 560 lid on right. Notice the difference in shifting forks. The early forks were used up until '53.

Farmall 400 lid on SMTA. One hole was drilled for steering post. The other two are already there.

Another pic of 400 lid on SMTA. When comparing the oil reservoir placement on this tractor to another one of my SMTA's, there appears to be no difference. In other words, the reservoir should transfer to the later lid without modification.

If you use an early lid on your SMTA, you may have clearance problems with the TA lever. Lids from tractors with band brakes will need one hole drilled and tapped in side of lid for disc brake housing.

In your earlier thread of yesterday, you mentioned that your tractor was a '54 SM. I assumed, and so stated, that you owned a '54 SMTA. I just checked with Guy Fay's Data Book and apparently IH produced 650 SM's in the '54 model year. I was unaware of that. Most of my info regarding lids is not appropriate for your situation. In my defense, you could have corrected my erroneous assumption.

I don't know much about plain SM's so someone else will need to give you better guidance. All I can say is you won't need to swap shifting forks if you use a '52 lid. You may have to make some kind of adaptor plate for the oil reservoir and another for the battery box. It's all doable.

Lids from SMTA's, 400's and 450's are interchangable. The TA lever bracket may need to be changed.

Thanks for your cogent observation. Didn't I just post two pictures that made the point?

I now know why very few people post pictures on this site. Pictures don't prove anything.

BTW, the TA lever bracket is the same for all three models.

FOR the record...as a SMTA owner who has never had to actually do anything to it because it is the best running tractor I own, I found your pictures fascinating. I have never seen the underside of the deck on one. The pin that holds my shifter sometimes slides out and I have to line it up and get it back together. I can see some of that thru the hole while I line things up but never saw it from that perspective. I spent a fair amount of time looking over those pictures this AM and appreciate your time posting them.
