Alright just bought a old 340 and thought for sure today was the day it would start but couldn't get it to go. Has spark, cleaned plugs, replaced the coil. Adjusted the distributor. Took carb off and cleaned. Carb looked good, there is compression but the engine just turns over won't start. Any ideas, there is gas getting too the carb but doesn't seem to get past that, plugs aren't getting gas? Any ideas? Thanks for the help.

Prime the cylinders with a teaspoon of gasoline each.
If it briefly starts, you will then know it is a fuel delivery issue. Vacuum leaks At the manifold are possible, as is passages in the carb plugged up.
If it starts then dies, try holding your hand over the intake of the carb when cranking. if it sucks your hand enough to make you pull it away, it probably needs passages cleaned in the carb. JimN

Along the lines of what Jan said but I pull off the hose running from the air filter and spray carb cleaner directly into the open choke on the carb while someone cranks over the engine.

Also remove carburetor and check intake is not full of mud dobber nests just had a bad two weeks trying to start an old allis b and that was half of my problems other half was whoever worked on it last tightened up the valves till they were held open a little no compression !!

Check to make sure the carb jets are all clear and make sure the manifold is bolted up tight against the engine. Any vacumm leak will cause it not to suck gas up to the cylinders expecially at slow cranking speeds.
